Hello,
I recently purchased an '85 Bronco with a recently rebuilt 351W HO engine. It is running rich and the previous owner was never able to get it dialed in correctly. I'd like to get the engine timing set correctly before tweaking on the carb. BUT - where should I set it? The stock timing is 10 degrees BTDC as labeled in the engine compartment, however here's what has been changed on the engine when it was rebuilt:
- Edelbrock intake (Im not sure of the part # but I think it is just a moderate improvement over stock)
- Holley 4160 4BBL carb (Direct replacement of stock carb from what I was told).
- It still has stock headers and exhaust although that will be changed a few months from now.
I'm guessing that with the increased air volume that it needs to be advanced a couple degrees from the stock setting. Am I correct in this thinking?
I've tried to advance it until the engine pings, but at 16 degrees I can't hear it pinging, but it might just be that I can't hear it over the engine noise. I don't want to burn out a piston!!
I'm basically looking for a ball park setting to use so I can get the carb tweaked...
10-12 degrees should be a good starting point. The 351W will run fairly good from about 6 to around 16. You won't hear it knock until it starts pulling on an uphill grade or under hard acceleration. Also note that the engine will run hotter the more you advance the timing.
