I recently put a 302 out of a 87 Cougar into my 86 Bronco.
After installation the truck idles fine but vibrates when
I put it in gear it runs really rough and back fires. I think
the timming is right I tried to adjust it with a timming light.
The trans. seems to shift fine but I haven't taken it over 25mph
because it shakes so bad. I'm thinking I may have done something
wrong with bolting the drive plate to the torque converter. Is this possible? Does anyone know if this could cause the vibration I'm having? All the bolts lined up fine when I torqued
them. Does it just need to be broken in?
I'm at a loss?
Please give advice!?!
make sure the firing order is correct. sometimes if you are off by one wire, it will seem to idle o.k., but it runs rough under load. also check to see if all plugs are firing. you may want to do that first.
Perhaps the Cougar engine is a H.O. which makes the firing order the same as a 351 W. The cam and timing are different on the H.O. and regular 302's. They came in all Mustangs from about 1982 till 1995 and may have been put in some other cars as well. If I am thinking right, it may have a different firing order than what the Bronco originally had.
