ok its time once again to test for deq! my engine burns some oil mostly on start ups or long periods of idle, so i plan on changing oil and filter also spark plugs, is there a plug i might use to boost my chances of passing? i replaced the cat two years ago and it passed ok, i have had the plugs replaced last year and they looked terrible, oil build up? i am a bit peeved at this motor, it has only 60,000 miles on it and has a few leaks as well, should i plan on gassing up with preimum? other than the smoke and leaks it runs great! and i want to keep it! how about these aftermarket additives to pass deq? any help would be much app! i have less than a month till i need to renew tags!
smoking should not keep ya from passing a smog check/emmisions unless it is extreme. If it is that bad with the plugs possibly 1 heat range hotter will burn up the carbon, running on the highway going to full throttle will also help a little, particularly before going in to be checked. There is some stuff in a silver can, restore or something like that, seems to help a little. Do an oil change add some, hope for the best. If there are seal leaks add a bottle of stop leak when ya change the oil. It normally says it will take a couple of hundred miles to take effect. Check the valve covers for being tight, retorque the intake manifold. make sure it has a clean airfilter, a new or clean PCV valve if it has one. Also maybe clean the MAF sensor, and wash out the intake and Throttle body. This is all pretty easy stuff and done from the top of the engine. We do annual emmisions here and I just make a high speed run prior to getting to the place, gotta do it this month too. mine is 4.0 with almost 300K on it, runs great has no problems with the emissions.
If you replaced the cat two years ago, and have only 60,000 miles on your truck, you gave someone a pile of money... Unless your truck is old. The Feds and CA have pushed the manufacturers to warranty all emissions affecting equipment for more miles than that. A cat will last as long as you want, if you keep your engine in tune.
If the air cleaner is good, the plugs & wires good, a recent oil change, PCV clean and functional, thermostat working properly, you should pass the test. I don't know deq from dairy queen, but assume it is your emissions test. I would clean out the throttle plate area and the inside of the intake manifold with a cat-safe cleaner.
