Sometimes that is true yep. Maybe me and dustin should go hit a race or two, see just how good a 351 efi with an auto does against a little ol 302 with a manual
Ive always kinda thought the stock 302 vs 351 worked like this, the 351 does have more power, but doesnt quite had the speed factor. Thats just from the few 351's Ive raced against when I was young, and thats not many.
Ive beat my buddies 91 f150 4x4 with a 351 auto. Mine has stock manifolds, well stock everything except the custom leaky exhaust, and his had headers and sweet dual exhaust. So stock for stock, in the speed department, you might be surprised!
I cant stress enough how much power an stock auto tranny takes away from an engine.
Seriously though, I think stock they would be close but mods then the 351 may come out on top. I've seen a stock 86 302 be even with a stock 84 351 4V. Could be interesting!
Yeah with enough mods the 351 will win, just like a 460 would blow the doors off of a 351 with enough mods. Thats not quite what I was trying to state though!
there's so much difference from the c6 era tranny's compared to todays trannies though... the '83 kick her down and it goes instantaneously... the new stuff has a little too much slippage for my liking...
maybe slippage is the wrong term... but you know what i mean... its not an instantaneous whomp, roar... its a slower, more hesitant, impossible to describe movement... nature of the beast, not a problem...
Yeah the old ones always had more of an instant kickdown feeling but the newer ones seem slower. I know my 04 has that delay due to the electronic throttle but apparently a tuner like an edge or something gets rid of that.
Hmm im not quite sure what you guys are talking about. I havent driven a vehicle without an OD in it for quite some time now though either, so I probably forgot.
Like when you pass someone and don't need to floor it, just give it some gas, there is a delay before it shifts down. It is more that the throttle response is sluggish due to the delay between the throttle pedal position and the actual throttle blade opening to where the computer tells it to be. The old throttle cable was better IMO, but a tuner could make the new ones feel just as responsive.
