Hey, new to the forum. I have a 2001 Excursion V10 with 117,000 miles. I have noticed my fuel milage falling lately. To my knowledge the fuel injectors have never been out/cleaned. Is this a big job? what do I need to do? any whatchouts? Whats the best way to clean them and do the job right. thanks
Welcome to the site egalaxie. Have you changed plugs and boots? Air filter clean? Fuel filter clean? I would do the basic tune up items first and see if mileage improves. Proper tire inflation is a must too.
taking the injectors out isn't the hardest thing to do, all you do is push in the schrader valve (passengers side) to relieve the fuel rail pressure and take the three bolts off the fuel rail itself, one on the drivers, and passengers side and behind the intake manifold. and gently wiggle it off the injectors, if you want to pull the fuel rail too then go down to the local auto store and grab a set of plastic fuel line removers, the behind the intake manifold use a mirror to see the supply and return lines (they are with different sizes) and take the safety clip off both and compress the spring and pull the lines with the plastic fuel line removers. also the 3rd bolt is back there and a little hard to find and you will need to pull a little vacuum line.
Oh and you need to pull the injector's wiring clip, there is 10, 1 for each injector.
when reinstalling make sure you do not pinch an injector O ring it will cause a lean condition and a lot of problems
Thanks, thats all good info. I am actually wanting to clean the injectors or at least pull one to look at it. I did all the tune up stuff a while back, which was a good thing because one plug was getting ready to blow, about one more turn of the thread and it would have been gone. Tire pressure is all to the high side so its good.
