i have 97 F-250HD with 351 and it is burning oil someone told me to put heavier oil in it so i got 10w 40 would this work or is it something else. also i has 223,000 on it im getting 12-13mpg with this many miles on it is there anything can do to it to get few more mpg or anything.
Well...if you are burning oil...one or more could be the issue...
1. Bad valve seals
2. Worn valve guides
3. Pressurized crankcase (oil pan) due to a clogged PCV valve or breather system
4. Blow-by from worn piston rings
IMO...with that many miles on the engine...sounds like it is time for a reman long block. That should get your mpg's back in the 15-17 empty highway miles.
