Smoke in exaust
Smoke test really exists here in Europe, it is optical test, but!!!!! Diesel engine may really have 0.5-2% of solid dust in exaust, but if gasoline engine has more then 0.2% of smoke in exaust it can not pass any other test. It is engine with DEAS oxy sensor, ore burning oil. CxHx is so high that smoking gasoline engine can not pass any emission test!!!!! Whight water steam in exaust is not a problem only! Black smoke - CxHx and CO emissions are so high!!! Blue smoke - engine birns oil!
So if you can see no smoke visually (emission tester reads less then 0.2%) worry about nothing!
computer diesel engine power management has much to do with it. the engines produce far more horses and torque for the same amount of fuel and the engines last far longer due to little engine oil fuel dilution from too rich injection.
black smoke out the exhaust is lost money.
you won't see a black smoke diesel electric any longer on the rails either.
only boy toy diesels spew lung killing black particulate smoke, the coal miner killer.
personally, i can use far less sulfuric and nitric acid in my lungs
here's what my new Dodge diesel will look like when it's built out

But NxOx emissions of diesel are really harmfull. The first way to reduse them is EGR, but EGR decreases hospower and if fuel is bad, especially with sulfur EGR cause deposits in cylinders and cylinder head.
Now turbocompaund appeared - exaust gas rotates turbine passing power to cranckshaft , but it does not solves problem fully.
SCR - selective catalistic reduction really works. There is one additional tank with urea mixture on truck. Cheap way. Called AD-blue in Europe.
So as I can understand California provides Euro-III and Euro-iV emission standards in the USA. Making engines for Europe Cummins makes Euro-III diesel, Volvo trucks makes Euro-V diesel.

But diesel fuel is more expencive! I wanted to convert my aero to diesel after experiments with friend's vans, but no there is no reason. Return of investment period after this engine swap is about 5 years. And I'm not sure that difference will be like today. I see difference increases. 7 years ago diesel was the cheappest fuel in Europe, now the most expencive.
Nowdays real way out is NG.
