Would a 94 to 96 351 with 5 speed od and transfer case fit in a 79 1/2 ton 4x4 with ac and power steering be done and be reliable? I have seen one in a 76 bronco. Has this ever been done in a late 70s pickup? Could the oil pressure, temp, voltage, fuel gauge and speedometer be hooked up to it too, plus have cruise control. I know that the drive shafts would have to be fabricated and fuel tanks be from newer truck because of high pressure fuel system. Would the wiring and controls be able to connect right. Would the transmission and transfer case line up close enough to come out of transmission hump in a reasonable location so I wouldn't have to take out the seats or something. How much modifying would it take and cost? The reason for this is because I want EFI and computerized stuff for better gas mileage and performance
I've thought about this for my truck too but decided to keep it carbed. Anyway, in response to some of your questions: Use the oil pressure and temp senders from your original engine to maintain compatibility with your gauges. An EFI motor has an internal voltage regulator while your truck will have the little box on the fender. You could either wire the EFI alternator into your harness (I don't know how) or you could find a HD alternator for your truck and put a serpentine pulley on it (assuming you keep the serpentine belt setup) Use your old speedometer cable (should go into new transmission). Don't know about hooking up cruise control though. You will have to set up a new accelerator linkage somehow, as EFI engine has a cable accelerator. The rear gas tank should drop right into your truck, they look the same shape between my two trucks. The upper intake manifold should clear the firewall but I can measure and compare my two trucks if you want to make sure. The wiring harness will be your biggest challenge if you have the patience for it, and would be something I personally wouldn't be scared of doing. Sounds like a fun project and let us know if you decide to go with it.
Hope this helps.
Oh yeah, you will probably need a custom exhaust for it too because I don't know of any factory 351 exhaust that will clear that pesky crossmember between the cab mounts (at least on a 2wd)
After thinking about it some more, you would also need to modify your clutch assembly. Your truck currently has a mechanical clutch but the new 5 spd would have a hydraulic clutch. You could probably modify your existing clutch pedal to use the hydraulics or else you might be able to install the later pedal assembly in your truck. There is a lot of work to be done in a project like this but it can be done if you have the patience and the guts to do it. Good luck.
And after even more thinking about it, you might need to change the oil pan and oil pump pickup too, depending on what style of pan your truck uses. I don't know about the 4x4 but my 2wd has a front sump oil pan that I think came from a mid 70s Lincoln....
I dont actually have this truck yet but when I find one im buying it I think you would have to change the oil pan and put in a clutch master cylinder. How big is a clutch master cylinder. Does a mid nineties lightning 351ho bolt up to a 5 speed. and do these lighting engines have ac ps and other things like that, if not can you bolt these things on?
Somewhere I saw it stated that the modern 90's 5.8s (351w) always came auto. I'm curious about that as I have been tempted to get one, but prefer manuals.
Brad godkin had a `90 F-150 with a 351 and 5-speed, and uh daywalker has a F-250 with a 351 and 5-speed, I think a `96...its true the lightnings only came with autos though.
what about the transmision would it fit through the stock hole or can you bolt a clark 4spd od (79 trans). If the 5speed fits close to original will the np205 transfer case bolt to it or would you have to divorce it?
