[quote=kawa;6109398]When I first got my truck I was attempting to remove mine and the top Nipple broke off. Oh well, it was headed for deep six anyway.
That little piece of crap is the one of the reasons why most of our e4od's fail prematurely....heat! What in the world were they thinking. I have mine hanging on the wall in the shop. Every time I get pizzed and need to throw something......
Yeah if I had replaced mine sooner I might have got more than 240k miles out of the original tranny. You guys are dealing with that Mi. heat nothing like these Texas warm spells. Brian did hook me up with a super duty cooler when he rebuild the tranny. That was 3 years ago and no problems yet.
Forgot to mention that there is also an additional tranny cooler behind the AC cooler. It's about a 1' X 1' and about 1" thick. Is this big enough? I think it's what's called a stacked plate? All the fins are solid unlike the fins on the stock cooler. I don't know that I could get anything bigger in there with the intercooler in the front.
Also does the tranny cooler in the radiator help very much?
I actually put a 6.0 cooler on my truck and I love it, its huge.. The problem is that I have the complete set up to add a 6.0 intercooler. Like Neal, I have stage twos in my future with a D66 turbo and I dont know which is more important, the tranny cooler or the intercooler. Which IS more important!? They both wont fit in there so I have to choose one are the other. Reek
You need both IMO. Those stage 2's will definitely heat up the tranny.....higher EGT's too. Others have a 6.0 IC with a trans cooler too....just not sure if they were using a 6.0 trans cooler.

Thanks for the pitures RÖENTGEEP, but non of those are a 6.0 coolesr. I just went out and measured the one on my truck and its 14x24x2. No way it will fit between the brace like shot one, but the other two may hold some promise. I just went out and measured and If i remove the little little rubber splash guard thingy (official name Im sure) under the radiator and mount it like the last two photos, the bottom would be about 1 inch lower then the bottom of the bumper. I would have to remove all the mounting brackets form the cooler and somehow try to protect it. But thats closer then I was before. I still would like to see if anyone has done this and has a picture of it.

gotta have both, hands down. one thing i have done in the past on my offroad trucks (heat buildup is a huge issue there too) is to add a couple of tranny coolers (any standard stock ford cooler) with 12V electric fans mounted to them. i had them wired to a temp probe mounted in the tranny pan and when the temp got warm enough the first one would come on (normal driving). if things started to heat up and i was doing more driving the second one would kick on. of course i had manual switches on both so i could manually turn them on. the most beautiful part about this setup is you dont have to have any lines running up front nor a cooler blocking air through the rad/IC, basically a remote mounted cooler.
i'll see if i can find any pics, this was several years back when i had my 1985 F250 with 460/C6 and 39" Iroks.
Are you sure that the last one isnt a 6.0 trans cooler?, the other two I think are tru-cool.
Positive. I bought mine from the local dealership when they matched a internet price I had found. The 6.0 is at least twice as big as the one in the picture. It has the dimensions that I listed before 14x24x1.5
(I said by 2 before but its not quite that thick.) It is huge though.
The stock 7.3L cooler is a 28k GVW model. This Tru-Cool Max 4739 unit is a 40K model.
28k??? Where did you hear that??? I bought a 25k that is 4 times bigger than the sock, same size internal routing ports, etc.... 28k has to be some sort of misprint, right?
