I recenlty got the registration renewal notification for my 65 Falcon and my 49 F1. I was shocked that the Falcon's fees were more than the trucks. After looking over both registrations I noticed that the DMV had the weight of the Falcon listed at 3360lbs. WHAT????
This pushed the fees up into the next higher category.
I went and had the car weighed (2481 lbs) and took some dealer specs to the DMV. No big deal. They told me that for older vehicles (anything prior to the 17 digit VIN #'s----somewhere around the early 80's) their sytem couldn't retireve the data so they arbitrarily insert the data....Nice! (said with tons of sarcasm)
In the end it was no big deal to get them to change the weight of the vehicle which lowerd my fees considerably.
I don't know how other states do things but I wanted to pass this along. In New Mexico, anything without a modern 17 digit VIN# can be a little tricky for the folks at DMV (it confuses them)
...man, I hear ya...when I purchased my '56 last year thr P.O. had it
since 1973 and the ladies behind the counter couldn't find a listing for
the effie and freaked!
They called up to Lansing (MI) and were told I'd have to go get it weighed!
I told 'em it was in pieces......went back home & grabbed some repair
manuals, printed out all kinds of "stuff" and convinced 'em it was all official
straight out of my Ford repair manual & they bought off on it & listed my
effie at 3250 as orininal with a 292 CID...
Man...I grabbed all my "stuff" & my cane & hauled a$$ outta there faster
than John Force on a final run for the trophy!!!
Interesting, Bobby, because I was told by NM DMV that the weight listed was not the actual weight, and that they wouldn't allow a weight from a certified truck scale to be substituted (this was for a more modern vehicle that they had database info on). In my case I wanted a higher weight because it would exempt me from smog inspections....
Ross,
Maybe I just got lucky at the DMV I was at (the one in Cottonwood Mall). The guy at the info desk remembered the car from the prior year when I first registered it and he had to do the VIN inspection. He took one look at the weight they had on the registration and said "No way does that little car weigh that much" He didn't even want to see my certified weight slip or the factory info....He asked me what I thought it weighed and would have gladly change it to whatever.
I had it changed to the weight on the slip.
Wouldn't it be nice to actually get some consistant service from the DMV???
Wow they even lic cars by weight in NM? here a pickup is cheapest followed by cars based on year then the highest of them all is SUV's. my pickup cost $65/yr wifes expy $345/yr
Now it was recently just changed but it used to be all personal pickups were lic at 3ton unless you specified higher class, well my superduty is overweight empty by that standard (truck weighs 7100lbs) now all pickups have to be lic 4ton but anyone that has one currently at 3 gets grandfathered in until the vehicle changes hands.
here your 65 falcon would be I think it's $35 and the F1 would be $25 as I recall.
In New Mexico trucks are charged by the GVW. A typical half ton truck is roughly $50/yr. I had thought cars were just a flat rate until this whole weight thing came up. Lightweight cars, less than 3000lbs run approx $30/yr, over 3000lbs is approx $50/yr.
Trailers are also by GVW, but we do at least get an option to get a permanent regitration for them (for a fee equivalent to 5 years of registration fees)
In California, they consider Pick-Ups "Commercial" vehicles. To get my '49 Registered I had to have it weighed and produce a receipt. It was 2740 lbs. It is 3740 with me in it.........
Well, I just got back from the local DMV of MN, and I paid $79.00. That was $39.50 for the 1985 F150, and $39.50 for the 1993 Saturn. Took all of 2 minutes to write the check, and for her to hand me tabs. And i was on my way.

I knew you was Full of It, guess I didn't realize by how much
I paid $25 4 years ago for my 1950 (other brand here) "Classic Vehicle" tag. It never runs out. I hope the Mississippi Legislature never changes this, at least not before I finish my '54 Effie. However listing a 1983 model as a "classic" really makes me feel old!! Have a nice day! Steve
what's electricity, and where can I get it? Actually, though.....my dad brought me into town when I was getting shipped out for the military, and he asked me,"How long you in for?" I said "2 years". He replied, " well, Heck, I'll wait here then."
