Lazy Odometer
Lazy Odometer
Hi everybody, new to the board, done a lot of reading, finally thought I'd post. I've got an '01 F250, PSD, auto tranny that's right around 101K miles. Noticed the other day that the odometer quit turning over, then noticed a while later that it went back to working. Seems like sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it will work for a while then quit. The trip still works fine, as does the speedometer. I would like to sell this truck in the future, and need to have a working odometer. This truck doesn't have the digital dash, so as far as I know, there's no way of going into the computer to see the 'actual miles' for re-sale purposes. Is there a way to fix this, replace it or am I going to have to put in a whole new instrument panel? Anybody know the legalities on replacing an odometer if thats what I'm forced to do? Thanks for all your help!
In most states you'll have a title that states "Not Actual Milage" and this does devalue the vehicle. Also, to do it legally and properly you will get a working cluster or have the qualified mechanic/dealer purchase this and then install it stamping the appropriate milages from the old and new odometer into the metal of the drivers door jam. All-in-all it will cost you a fair amount of money and add nothing to the value of the vehicle to replace the odometer if everything else is working. (just my opinion)
P.S. Buying a used cluster and modifiing it to match the actual milage and then installing it without any kind of stamping or note on the title is illegal, though to me not in any way unethical.
