351 Cleveland Build
I am building a 351 Cleveland to swap into my 69 Bronco. It is an all around trail rig, mostly used for rock crawling. So low end torque is very important to me. I also like to play in the mud once in a while, so I need plenty of horsepower to clean the 37" tires out. I am thinking about 300 to 350 hp and 400 ft/lbs of torque is what i would like to get, but it also needs to be dependable. I am starting with a 74 2v that I picked up. I am looking for any advice on intakes, cams, head work, bottom end, etc. This is my first cleveland, and you dont hear too much about people building them for trucks. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Edelbrock makes a great Air Gap intake manifold for their 2V heads. I believe that this will fit any 2V heads.
Cams that give you good low end torque(Comp Cams 255DEH,XE256) can run out of steam below 4000 RPM. If you need power at high RPM, you need longer duration. You could use a 265DEH, or XE 262, or even a 275DEH with a stall converter(if auto tranny). You could convert to a Hydraulic Roller cam to get more lift, but the price goes up.
The bottom end is OK, but you can convert it to 4 bolt mains. The only other thing that I would do is to install oil restrictors.
The other things that I would do is a double roller timing set, and roller rockers.
I loaned out my book on 'How to Build Ford Motors' by Tom Monroe, and haven't gotten it back, so I am not able to look the information up at this time.
