While My Engine Is Out...

I am going to take out my carbureted 302 engine (rebuilt in 1995, with about 60K miles on it, good compression, healthy engine) out of my '85 F150 to replace the leaking front and rear main seals. While my engine is out, I plan to do a few upgrades. But first, this is what I have done to my basically stock carbureted 302 engine:

-Removed all emissions junk (except PCV and EVAP system)
-Replaced TFI/EEC-IV with the Duraspark II ignition
-Replaced VV carburetor with Holley Street Avenger
-Edelbrock Performer intake manifold (non-emissions)

With all the emission junk now removed, would a different timing chain or cam be beneficial? I seem to have heard something about the emissions had something to do with how the timing and cam were matched to the engine.

And secondly, I have heard that the stock heads on these engines don't flow very well. I was thinking about a set of aluminum Edelbrock Performer heads to match my Performer intake manifold. Anyone have any experience with these?

What else would be wise to do while my engine is out?

I'd have the intake/exhaust ports matched. As in take the gasket and file the port until they match the gasket, this will help the engine flow and breathe better.

Just make sure you get all the shaving out.

If you can afford this, do it. You can also use the performer cam with it. If you look around a little bit on the edelbrock site, I think you can find they have a kit with the heads, cam, and everything, already matched up, already proven on a dyno. No guess work, and when you are bench racing, you will know how much HP you are really putting out.

Here's a link.

Thanks! And what about the timing set? Seems like I read somewhere on here that you can get additional gains from a non-emissions timing chain. Is there any truth to this? What year timing chain should I go for?

I know the timing chain is an issue on the 460's, I have not heard anything about it regarding the small blocks. I am sure you can get an aftermarket adjustable timing set though.
