Took the truck out last weekend and tried to pull a buddy out of the mud and managed to snap my drivers side front axle. I just got the stock Dana 44 frotn end in it. Iv heard this is the "HD" front end. Will any 44 axle fit...such as out of a mid 80's truck, or am i going to have to find one for this specific truck. And what is the difference between a "HD' and a regular 44??
The HD 44 axle has larger axle bearings and larger locking hubs, but the axle shafts are the same as the regular duty. No, the shafts from an eighties model won't work, they have the TTB axles in them.
The D44HD was in all standard F250 4x4s.
It's basically a D44 with 8 lug outers and it has leaf springs instead of coils.
Like flcracker9 said, 80s axle shaft won't work.
Did it take out the u joint and ears on the shaft, or just snaped the shaft?
IF it were me, I'd upgrade to chromoly shafts and some good quality spicer joints on both sides, but you could get just one for the side you broke for a little more than the price of a stock shaft.
Its not true carnage until you do this!!! Dana 44's suck. They do work good to hold down a tarp from blowing away when you actually have something valuable to cover...

No wonder, look at the size of those tires. The Dana 44 will handle a good amount of abuse, but it's no hardcore offroad diff
All depends on tire size and weight. I've abused the snot out of my 44, running up to 38" swampers. After I upgraded to decent shafts and spendy u joints, I quit having to change them every trip.
Obviously, a 44 under a fullsize is not going to last if you pitch the front end on a jump. I don't think a 60 will fare much better. I've seen them break like that under similar "conditions" too. They just aren't made to fly without some work done.
I know they are not solid axles...obviously. What I am talking about is the axle shafts are a solid strait axle, are they not?? And what do you mean using the leafs???
