Hey guys, guilty I am...guilty of being a stocker of this website lol. I have read many threads here but almost never write anything. Nice work, lots of good info. I own a 2002 f-150 lariet fx4 5.4, and have had her since day 1. Long story short, blew 1 motor allready plug, problem of course. Well, new engine from ford payed by ford, going on two yrs with new motor. Today, driving home,I felt what I thought was a misfire. Towed it to the dealer, they tell me the #8 coil pack blew, no check engine light. They are telling me $350 plus tax. Do you guys think that is a fair price? Do I have to worry about this motor crapping out on me again? Thanks for any and all info Andy
Welcome to FTE MaximaDogg! Glad to see you came out of the shadows. Sounds a little high to me. Say that they charge you $100 for the COP. That leaves $250 for labor. I am not sure what the going rate is for labor right now but lets figure $80/hr. That means that they are charging you for 3.1 hours to do the job. The dealer should be able to switch out a single COP much quicker than that. I think it should be closer to $200 for the job. Good luck!
Chances are good they used the COP’s from your last motor, so depending on miles and whatnot they may be getting worn out. A coil pack usually goes for about $100, I’d just buy one and do it myself, it’s not a hard job and shouldn’t take very long. $350 is basically the dealer making money off of you.
Thank you both for getting back so soon. I made the decision to let the rapist, a.k.a the dealership, do the work. That price was with the diagnostic test, as well as an airfilter. The truck is also a supercrew with about 88,000 good to know that they may have used the ones from the old motor, thanx. Do you think that the other COP's are on the way out? I try and take care of her as best as I can. well, thanx again Andy
just a side note...since you are going to be at 100,000 miles soon i would recommend getting your spark plugs changed when you get around that mileage...and try not to forget...some say this is the cause of the infamous plug blow out problem....also remember ALWAYS use Motorcraft plugs bought from Ford in these modular motors.
Good to know. Thank you for the info on the plugs. I have had 1 motor already blow on this truck, the new motor has about 30,000, or less, on it. So, do you think I should wait till I get 100,000 on this motor? Glad you said to only buy motorcraft plugs probly would have bought more expensive ones, thinking they are better and meanwhile they are the cause of problems to come thanx again Andy
just wait until you get around 100,000 on that motor....but it never hurts to change them early.
also another tip...some auto parts stores might try to sell you Autolite plug for cheaper which are made by MotorCraft supposedley....lots of guys like them...but lots don't...i would just recommend the Motorcraft ones...i put motorcraft ones in my truck and they seem to be doing fine still....
