Alright i have an 86 f150 with the FI 302 and ~130K on it. I replaced my alternator last week and when i took my smog pump out i realized that the filter was completly black. I've been calling around and no one seems to have the filter cause Ford discontinued that part. I got my smog check done in december (damn california) and here are the results:
HC
15 mph at 1813 rpm i measured 130 ppm out of a max of 131 ppm
25 mph at 1169 rpm i measured 88 ppm out of a max of 103
CO(%)
15 mph measured .22 out of a max of .87
25 mph measured .24 out of a max of 1.10
NO
15 mph measure 154 ppm with max of 1085
25 mph measure 252 ppm with max of 1120
%CO2
15 14.9
25 14.9
%O2
15 0.0
25 0.1
All scores done with ignition at 11 degrees BTDC
Could the bad smog pump filter be causing me to have a high HC count, or is there something else that can be causing it. I passed the test, but i'm afaraid that they are going to make me take it again and not going to pass. I cant afford a car so i need to get this thing runner cleaner.
Is there anyway that i can take the filter out and replace it?
Can i wash it out with something?
anyother suggestions?
Thanks,
Scott
I have an '85 with a 300. Your HC is waaay higher than mine. I pass it pretty easily. As for the filter for the smog pump, it ain't much of a filter is it? Maybe you could use some air compressor filter material as found at Sears...??? Is the pump otherwise working? It should burn up the HC before it hits the cat. Also, any issues with the way it runs? If it's rich that will (obviously) trigger the high HC.
Even though you have 2 years before the next test, I'd try to fix it, as the extra HC is probably making life tough for the cat.
Thats the thing you can smell the fumes coming from my exhaust, but i'm getting anywhere between 20 and 25 mpg, so i dont think im running rich. If i am, i wonder wat i can get? (who needs a economy car, i have my truck, lol). As far as the pump goes, i took the hose off and it was pushing air out of the hose, so i guess it works. As far as the compressor filter i'll see wat i can do. Another thing is that i had to do a smog check the year before also, i was PO when in the mail it told me that i had to get it resmoged.
The only thing that i can think of why the HC is besides the filter is that the truck sat for 7 or so years after my grandpa passed away back in 1999 or 2000.
There's no smog pump air cleaners used after 1967.
Huh?
When introduced in 1966, smog pumps had their own little air cleaner attached, inside that was a filter made from foam (C6AZ9A496A-Motorcraft FA42).
The filters were only used 1966/67.
I'd like to see your setup, someone may have taken the pump from a 1966/67 Ford and installed it in your truck.
Ford used the same pump for nearly 20 years on just about everything.
btw: I'm about 25 miles east of LA (in Hacienda Heights), so we're prolly in the same area. If you wish, I'll come by and see what you've got for a setup. P/M me your phone number or directions.
ill take a pic and so you wat im talking about right now. My grandpa bought the truck brand new in 86 so i doubt he did that, give me a sec and ill take a pic.
By the way--- I'm a member of a couple of different forums....but if you're new, or been around for a long time, there's not too many places to go for help like this--rep the man....
