So I've gotten all of them off but two(exhuast manifold). They broke off at the flange so there is still enough to get a hold of. But I can't get vice grips to do much and I've tried rethreading them and using two nuts. They're pretty stripped.
So I though of mig welding a nut to each but I'm worried that the metal on the studs won't weld to the nut enough and would just spin. I could square off the stud to grab it better with vice grips but hate to remove any more from the studs.
Any ideas?? These last two bolts are really testing my patientce and skills. Any tips are really appreciated.
i think the nut idea is your best bet...i have heard this is what most muffler shops do even before they try vice grips...they torch the ends...weld a nut to every end...hope they all come out and if not go from there..
in about 2 weeks time i will be getting my headers put on my truck and i am hoping all goes well with mine.....*fingers crossed*
Do I heat the stud where it goes into the head. I assume I don't want to heat the actual head where the stude hole is. But I know I'll want to get the stud hot where it goes into the block to draw in the candle wax right?
I had 2 broken ones that vice grips would not move. I used a small stud extractor, the ones with the 1 way cutters, spiral shape. I pounded on the smallest one, soaked them with PB, used a small ratchet and socket, they came right out. Those studs are not in there that tight to start with, they don't even hit the bottom of the hole. I did heat the studs up with a plumbers torch to break some of the rust loose (maybe). A small set of extractors, #0 thru #5 is about 20 bucks. they are made to go in a drill, but you can get a socket and ratchet on the end just as easy. You will use a #1 or #2 depending how beat up you have it. Check it out, they are slick.
I had the same problem and welded the nut on the stud-you have to thread it on partway and fill it in. Clean the stud with a degreaser first. I had one that I had to weld twice because the weld was contaminated. Got all out with the ratchet.
Had the same problem on my wifes Expy. I shot the studs with Kroil a few times a day for tweo days. Bought a cylindrical type stud extractor from Pep boys, put a 1/2' socket on the extractor and they came right out.
Alright guys....anyone have any pictures of these extractors that worked for them? I know I'll need to do mine eventually one day and sure would like to se what worked for you.
