Distributer won't Turn!

I was recently trying to adjust the timing on my old 460. It is advanced about 12 degrees and I was wanting to back it off some. It was then that I realized that my distributer won't turn whatsoever. My buddy tried turning it so hard that he broke the cap off. Luckily I had another one. What would cause it to seize up and not turn like this.

Also, it starts backfiring really bad at about 3500rpms. I know that 4000 is probably about the max for a stockish 460 but I didn't know if the distributer would be the cause of this.

I had the same problem with the distributer on my 400. I just soaked it with penetrating oil every day and after 4 or 5 days it turned.

Hit the bottom with some good penetrating oil and let it sit for a while. PB Blaster is good stuff. Was the hold-down bolt seized?

No the hold-down bolt came right off. Ya I might have to steal some PB from work. I soaked it in WD40, but I just did it once. I'll keep it up and see what happens.

Dis-similar metals in contact are bad about seizing. May need some heat from a propane torch to help.

I had the same problem with a junk yard 460 core that I bought. I actually broke the distributor into pieces trying to get it out!

Spray it with some penetrating oil for a couple of days and keep your fingers crossed.

I already tried the propane torch approach. It didn't help me too much. Maybe I'll just leave the timing advanced for now. And just keep spraying it with penetrant for the next couple of days and hope.
