Fired up my engine for cam break-in and I have a strange noise. It sounds like vacuum leak but engine idles ok so it can't actually be a vacuum leak. It's loudest at the rh front side near the alternator but I don't think it's the alternator. Any ideas on what I should start looking for?
I few of the possible areas that could make noise is the timing chain because the double rollers sometimes make more noise than the factory timing chain. Also the aftermarket carbs sometimes are bigger than the factory carb and can make a hissing sound as it runs. It could also be a small exhaust leak. If it is this problem, it could be fixed. If it isn't don't worry about it and drive the truck. If there is a problem, it will get more noticeable and easier to find and solve.
These are a few of the possibilities I've also have encountered.
Traced the noise to a vacuum leak between the carb spacer and the manifold gasket. Removed the spacer and truck ran smoother and exhaust smells much better.
