I am thinking about buying a F-150 and I am having a heck of a time deciding on what I want. I found a 97' F-150 XLT that looks awesome and has $10,000 in mods, but it has a 4.6L. On the up side it only cost $15,000 because the guy just got a vette for his birthday and is going to buy a Camaro soon. The other option for me would be to buy a stock 97' with a 5.4L and put a Holley Thunder supercharger in it. I heard if you do that it has 30 hp over a stock 99' Lighting.
It seems like you like power, If so I would go with the 5.4L motor. The 4.6 does'nt seem to have much more power than the 4.2 V6 motor. The gas milege is not to much different, and I think you'll like the extra get up and go.
Hey Wade,
I've had both engines. It depends on what you're going to do with it.
There's nothing wrong with the 4.6L engine. It's about 200 Hp, and there's a lot of after market stuff for it thanks to the Mustang. For a daily driver that doesn't do a lot of hauling or towing, it's fine. A good dependible engine. Low end torque is not the greatest, but hi end is real good.
On the other hand, if you're looking for something to do some work on a regular basis, or if you like to put your foot in it a lot, the 5.4L is the way to go. It'll pull well of the line, and hi end is good, too.
They're both good engines. If you don't need or want the extra cubes, don't pay for them, but don't buy less engine than you need either.
See what I mean, it really based on what you plan to do with it.
Now that I've muddied up the water for you even more, GOOD HUNTING!
I want a fast truck, I don't ever pull anything. I am just trying to figure out if I should take the one that looks fast or that one that I can make fast... If anyone knows someone who is selling a custom 97'5.4L F-150 XLT plz tell me.
