2002 Excursion Limo Problems Code P0720

I have a 2002 Excursion Limousine with the V10 that has a problem. It starts and runs fine but if you put it into gear and leave your foot on the brake after 5 seconds the OD light flashes and the engine will stall. It doesn’t happen all the time and It mostly only happens when the engine is cold. I used my code reader and it gave me a P0720 code(output shaft speed sensor). I replaced the sensor but the same thing happens(Same code and all). Once I get it going it runs and shifts fine. Only once has it stalled when I had been driving for a while. Any suggestions?

Is this sensor on the trans output shaft?

How did the pigtail look? Were the pins clean and seated fully (all pins sitting as deep as the others). I'd also follow the wiring as far as you can and see if it is chaffed and possibly grounding out somewhere. If its the trans output shaft sensor causing problems and its happening while standing still I would guess that the wiring is grounding out somewhere, or losing connection due to corrosion on the connector to the sensor, or possibly where that wire goes into the computer. May not be the main PCM as these trucks have lots of littel computers for many different things. I dont kbnow these particular vehicles well enough to tell you what that sensor feeds.

The OSS sensor was located on the top of the transmission near the rear. The plug and wiring harness looked fine.

I read in another post that someone with the same problem found that his alternjator was causing interference. He replaced it and it cured the problem. I tested my battery and alternator and they are both ok.

same problem with my 2002 EX V10

Recently my 2002 EX V10 has intermittently stalled when stopping at an intersection. I can not make it happen, also when it stalls the OD light is flashing. It does start up again, I do here some sputtering that smothes out and then it is fine. It has been running and drive great for years. I just had in to the dealer and they did all the fluids and replaced the fuel filter. I am concerned about the safety of my wife and kids who mainly use the truck. Any assistance regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated.

also a quick code reader question

Sorry, I should have asked on the last reply

I have access to a CEN-TECH CAN ODB II reader. Can I use this reader (my emissions tag does not say my truck is OBD II) or what reader should I be using?

Thanks in Advance

Your truck definetly is an OBD II vehicle. Not sure of the year, but sometime I think in the 1990s all vehicles sold in the U.S. were required to be OBD II compliant. Good luck.

Trucks either 3/4 ton or 1 ton or larger are not required to be OBD II compliant. I read it in a few spots, including here, in another thread.

They are technically OBDII, but dont have nearly as many sensors as a traditional OBDII setup. The heavy GVWR puts us in a class where we are under another set of emissions standards tehn regular vehicles. We dont need to have all the sensors due to this. We do have a diagnostic port connection under the dash like OBDII cars though.

Hello!

I live in Estonia and have '03 V10 Excursion with the some problem. I not found the problem 3 months. At last I changed all 10 coils and truck drives like new.

2002 V10 Ex intermittently stalls, no OBD codes

MY 2002 V10 EX still ocassionally stalls. Sometimes while stopped at intersection, you can feel an occasional miss, concerned that it is going to stall. My biggest concern is that it will restart and that it will not stall while driving (losing power brakes and steering). I had the codes checked and my truck shows no codes.

On your truck where you replaced the coils. How much where they and did you get an OBD code, let you know they are faulty.
