Hi, I have a 96 F250 with a PSD and an automatic. Lately I have been noticing an annoying miss under load or hard acceleration. It seems less noticeable when the truck is warm, but it still exists nonetheless. The strange thing is that some days it runs just fine with no missing or stumbling whatsoever; while on other days it runs like crud. I have heard that the under valve cover wiring can go bad causing problems, but would it come and go like this? Also, could it be the HPOP? Is there a way to check the HPOP to see if it is operating correctly? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Under cover wiring harness could cause this, easy to check pull off covers and inspect visually. If nothing noticable use a volt meter to check each circuit for excess resistence. Also while in there check glow plugs one could be failing also checked with ohms meter.Other possibilities are injector o-rings going bad leaking when cold then expanding when warming up to seal and run fine.Checking the Hpop as you asked is possible you need a guage that can measure hydraulic pressure to 3000psi.Then plug into the head at on of the 3/8pipe plugs along side where the hpop lines go into the head.Pressure should run around 2500max i think, others will have better spec info.Hope this helps good luck.God Bless.
Thanks for the info. I'll do this when I get the chance. Hey would one or more failing glow plugs cause it to run bad after it has been started? I suspect that the GPs are bad because it also starts hard sometimes.
