I drive a F250 7.3 diesel and sometime when I shift from park to Odrive my transmission will not engauge. It does it sometimes when it cold or hot. I can always shift into L and the transmission will engauge and can then shift up to Odrive and everything work fine. My transmission does not slip while driving and shift fine. My truck does have 155,000 mile on it now. When I bought the truck it had 140,000 miles. I want to change the fuild but if my transmission is on it's last leg I don't want to wast the money. Has anyone had this problem and is it the start of transmission failure. Also I need advise on whether to rebuild my stock transmission or go with one of the several aftermarket trany's. I would also like everyone's advise on which aftermarket trany's the best for the money (TCI, Heavy Hauler or a stock 4R100). I do not want one for speed only towing my 5th wheel trailer. My trailer loaded weights around 11,000 lbs loaded.
I had a problem with mine not shifting into drive from park, turned out it only needed a new filter and trans fluid. somthing about a collapsed (spelling) filter...
Depending on the previous owners habits, first place I would look is at the filter as previous mentioned. If they were not religious about checking the oil level or changing it a dirty filter may just be the culprit. Standard ford atf is all I ever run in my 1999 7.3 with no problems.
