What does it do, why do I need it. How or where is it located on my 94 300i6. My check engine like comes on and stays on, traced it to "code 617", which is my ERG Valve.
EGR = Exhaust Gas Recirculation. it allows a small amount of the exhaust into the intake to cool the air to reduce NOx emmisions, help with gas milage and run on crap gas. is it needed? yes and no.
where is it located? on the intake near the throttle body. it has a hard line running to the exhaust manifold with a sensor and vacuum line going to it.
Codes 617 is transmission related, the EGR codes are 326-337. to be exact, code 617 is...617
(M) memory
Transmission shift failure (1/2 shift) - Transmissions

My truck doesn't need "aircare" emissions testing. I'm exempt (pulled the cat out as it was plugged, and replaced it with a straight pipe too). My gas mileage is ok. I'm getting almost 200 kilometers out of 45 liters ($50 worth of fuel) and that was just my front tank 3/4 full. I haven't touched my front tank which is over full (70 liters)

Oh yeah. I mixed the codes.
We can't figure out why I'm getting a shift error. There isn't anything wrong with my transmission (other than it is a ford auto trans). Only time it shifts hard is when I am low on fluid. my lines leak into the new rad, and nothing seems to want to seal the leak.
I work at an Auto shop (as maintenance, detail, extra set of hands, etc.) and my manager put a code reader on it. Then he took it for a test drive (Ex F150 owner), and said there isn't anything wrong with my transmission that he could see or feel.
If you are getting ATF in your radiator, you have a leak in the cooler in the radiator.Exchange the radiator for another if it is still in warrentee. If NOT,you will have to get a new rad or have the internal cooler replaced.
OR,by pass the cooler in the rad with an external aftermarket cooler.

I miss worded that. My transmission lines bolt into my rad to cool the transmission fluid, where they attach to the rad, they leak from the threads. I have tried plumbers tape, thread seal, etc. etc. nothing seems to work. The Radiator is brand new (bought it in Dec 07).
You should have an oxygen sensor ahead of where the cat was. EGR issues may cause CEL because the gas hitting that sensor won't be what the computer wants to see. Sounds like it runs good. I'd leave it at that once you get that trans sealed up and the code issue cleared.
Seems like radiators are made somewhere in the world where quality control is lacking. You may have to exchange it and hope it is under warranty.
Ford factory rad, took it back to Ford, they claim there isn't anything wrong with it, that the problem is probably my lines. (in other words, I'm SOL and if I bring it into them, they'll fix it for a small fee)

O2 sensor was replaced. If it was an O2 sensor it would be a different code..
All I want is to turn off the check engine light, and sell the truck. I can't afford to feed her and myself each week, not at $5++ p/gallon. I love my F150, but she eats more than I do.
Someone else can fix the leaks... show me a 14 year old vehicle that hasn't had a full rebuild that dont leak...

Is there a way to clean it, or do I have to replace it??
