[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Nov-01 AT 09:48 PM (EST)]I don't know what year my 302 is, (tried looking where suggested, didn't find anything) but it has a 2 piece rear main seal. It has a 50oz balance damper & supposedly 50oz balance flywheel. The guy I bought the flywheel from said it came from a '89 F-150 302. I ran it for a year in my '81 F-150, and noticed it doesn't seem to be balanced correctly, kind of like it should've came from a '79 F-150 302. I dropped the 302 into my '79 F-150 with a C6 behind it, and bolted back up the flexplate it came with when I got the motor. It ran really smooth, not at all like when I had the manual tranny behind it. I screwed up the C6 install, and now the tranny is useless. I'm now gathering parts for the 3 speed manual conversion. I'm wondering what would happen if I were to get a 28oz balance damper and stick it on my motor. I'm hoping it would run smoother. Another thing I noticed is the damper comes off too easily, meaning it barely takes any effort from the balancer puller to pull it off.
Here's the numbers I found exactly as they appear on the flywheel:
That flywheel number indicates a 1988 truck application, which makes sense for an 89. What doesn't make sense is it has a two piece rear main seal. What are some numbers on the block?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Nov-01 AT 11:53 AM (EST)]My guess on the 2 piece seal is that who ever had that motor before I got it from a friend of mine, just happened to have a flexplate & balancer off of a later 302, and stuck those on there to make them work. The motor is in the truck right now, is there a way to locate the numbers with out pulling it back out? I was told to look below the right cylinder bank toward the back of the engine, to the left of the motor mount. I looked when I had the motor in the air and didn't find anything.
EDIT: Is there supposed to be some kind of weight tacked on to the flywheel? There is a weight molded into the flywheel its self, but I have heard fo tacked on weights falling off after some time.
You'll have to look in the passengers side, above the starter. The only way to see this in the truck is from underneath. you should have something like E7AT-####-AA for example. Also look on the drivers rear on the bellhousing mount right below the head. there should be the VIN # of the vehicle it came from. There should also be a Date code next to the Casting #.
