I ran into a snag today while instaklling the 4" lift on my truck. One of the lower bolts that hold the track bar bracket to the frame is stripped. The bolt head is fine, it's the captured nut inside the frame rail that is stripped. I can cut the bolt head off, but where do I go from there? Thanks.
As long as you have access to the back side where the nut is then you can use a nut and bolt. If not cut off the nut from the tab and weld on a new one.l
Yep, get the bolt out and use a new nut and bolt. I wouldn't bother welding it, if I had to do it quickly, I'd just ream out the stock nut and use a regular nut behind it.
Well, I ground of the head of the bolt and extracted the remainder of the bolt/nut. It was rusted solid and very deteriorated. I have VERY limited access to the nut, it is inside the boxed frame rail right behind the steering box. The only way to get to it is throught the front of the frame by the tow hook, and it's in the blind about 18" back in the frame.
I'll snap a few pics tomorrow of everything to give a better perspective.
there should be a metal tab that the nut is attached to. You can find it on the out side of the frame around the shock and just forward of the bump stop (tab sticks out of the rectangular hole in the frame. The metal bracket holds both nuts for the track bar bracket. Remove the second bolt and the bracket should lift up and pull right out. You may have to remove the shock to get it out. Cut off the old nut and weld on a new one. I have found this to be the best way to fix these hard to reach areas. I just did this on mine so if you need more help let me know.

This information is correct. Me personally, I would go to the dealer and order a new captive nut since it is a "staked" nut. One could weld a new nut to a tab, but I wouldn't do it since welding on a lock nut would likely melt the plastic lock portion. Putting in a lock washer would likely be difficult, so if you did do it, I would put red loktite on the bolt before putting it in.
