Put the temp control to defrost the other day and the rpms dropped to the point of stalling out. Not a gradual loss but real quick. If I'm in park or neutral, it doesn't stall but drops to about 500rpm. Any ideas?

I think when you're in defrost mode that the AC compressor runs a little bit. This is probably the source of the RPM drop.
I had the exact same problem on my 96' Explorer. I open the hood and watched the AC compressor. It would try to engage and then I saw a spark and it stopped. There was something binding up in the compressor. I shot it with some WD40 and no lie, it started spinning fine. That was almost 4 years ago. If I had taken it to the dealer i'm sure they would have charged me for a new compressor. Just wanted to put this out there in hopes that it will help someone else one day.
Clean up your IAC motor to make sure that it can compensate enough for the added load from the A/C compressor. Remove the belt, engage the A/C clutch with a jumper and make sure that it isn't binding up.
