I have talked in the past about redoing my son's pick-up in memory of him. I plan on rebuilding a 410 and wish to use E-85 fuel in it. My intent was to get a fuel injection system off of a 460 and use it on the 410. The local garage tells me I need a module that can sence the difference between E-85 and unleaded. If I develop the engine to have 11.5 to 1 compression the unleaded will have problems with detination so I wish to run solely E-85. Where do I go to get answers on setting up to accomplish my goals? Remember I am in the upper mid-west and winters aren't good for starting with ethanol. With the price of gas now days I believe E-85 may be the answer but if the bugs can't be worked out I will have to settle for regular fuel. I'm open to any thoughts.
Here's a link to MegaSquirt * *MegaSquirt - Electronic Fuel Injection Computer by Bowling & Grippo * *
This is an ECU that you can build or purchase assembled.
It is by far the best ECU for EFI going. It is open code and there are lots of programs already written for just about anything running.
Be sure to check out the forums, I'm sure you'll find what your looking for.
BobbyT is installing one on his 500 Caddy and I'm building an EFI and Ignition system for my Flathead later this year.
Maybe those links already mention it, but I've heard that E-85 gets worse gas mileage, and ends up costing the same as regular gas. But that is for flex-fuel type vehicles....IE a lower comp. ratio? If the engine is designed to only run on E-85 it may be better than what I've heard. I haven't thoroughly researched it either. Not trying to dissuade ya, just letting out what I've heard.
Havi, what you have heard is true. I have been looking over the MPG sheets and the Cost sheets on the truck and a car from a cousin and the data tells us that the E85 is NOT a bargain at all. It is more of a convenience or "option" of fuels if you will. It not only lowered the MPG by 15-18 %, but the bigger problem is the very noticable power loss and this will keep you from towing, climbing a hill on a mountain pass, and it is not always lower cost at the pump when you can find it. I think it is pig in the poke and just a profit center for the manufacturers. Nice way of upping the cost of a car with an easy sell to boot. After calculating the differnce, it looks like it costs a tad more to run the E85. I must note this data if from 5280 ft elevation with runs to 10,600 ft in the truck.

The issue is compression Flex Fuel vehicles have a lower compression just so they can run the poor grade gasolene we have. I am to young but back in the 50's and 60's vehicles were higher compression and ran on leaded gasolene which had over 100 octane rating and E85 has a 105-107 octane rating given the right compression it should get better MPG's and more power both torque and hp. E85 is good the engine just needs to be engineered for it to run efficiently. Plus also with Alcohol the engine actually runs cooler and that also gains hp.

Question? Is E85 the Deal of the Centuary it was touted to be?
Answer: Not even close.
That being said, I think we here are in a unique position to wring the most out of our machines and the E85.
The majority of us fall under no or minimum Air Quality Testing.
We can change out components adjust thingies and wring whatever is in those Ol Mills out.
We have the people and expierence right here, on this Forum to build vehicles that will actually be able to pass a Gas Station.

What better Tribute to Joey than a Big Honkin Truck that does what it's not supposed to?
Thanks for the info. I went to their site and I haven't determined whether their product is geared for Speed Density or Mass Air Flow systems. I e-mailed them to see what they have to say. While out shoveling out from the SNOW STORM I got thinking and I remember something about a MAF sensor so I am hoping they can deal with the MAF system.
Yes my 50 Panel is on hold until mom's Fiat is completed and I get Joey's truck done. I'm hoping that one if not both are completed this year. The truck has been on my mind for some time and I want it to make a statement when finished. Joey was a special kid and he would want something totally different just cause it could be done. His original intent was to have a blown 390 under the hood so I decided to go with something more rare and yet more fomitable when finished.
Take cafe folks.
