i am going to buy a 92 f 250 4wd with a diesel motor, manual tranny, stock tires, i'm going to use it mostly for highway driving(not pulling anything)and was wondering if anyone has any ideas on how low of a gear ration i can go to improve the mileage, something like 3.50 to 3.20, it feels like it has a 4.11 or something near that in it now, i'm not worried about powerloss, i haul a quad everyonce in awhile and thats it, i'm worried about any problems i might cause with a lower gear, also where is a good place to buy ring and pinion sets, any prefered brands, any help would be appreciated, thanks vernon
Why buy a diesel to haul a quad? have you seen fule prices lately? I would go with 3.55s
if I was you, good economy with enough low end grunt if you do ever need to tow anything. I think I've heard of people running as high as 2.75s with out problem but cant remeber.
Or if you realy want a diesel get an old diesel ranger maybe, good millage and should fit your quad.
i have to old 6.9 fords, 84 dually and a 85 4wd,( my first diesels) good motors and drive trains but totally wasted sheet metal and interiors and they are starting to nickel and dime me to death with small repairs( i wish the rest of the trucks were built even half as good as the motors), the 92 is a really nice truck that has been cared for. now back to the subject at hand, i own the 6.9's because after about 9 months of owning them i am a firm believer in burning veggie juice and mixing diesel with WMO, in a few weeks i'm going to start putting about 600 miles a week on the truck and would like to stretch the fuel mileage as far as i can beacause i will not be able to refuel with my homemade fuel until i return home and i don't really want to hual it around and worry about someone messing with it or trying to steal it, as far as buying a ranger, i have only found one in decent shape before and it sold for around 5000 dollars, also being of redneck heritage i would feel abit lost without the option of putting it in 4wd and driving off the road when need be. thanks vernon
