Yes, unless you want to invest at least $500 in a J2534 pass thru module and a 3day membership at motorcraft's tech site, the dealer is the way to go.
Here's the kicker though, they will want the old one installed so they can suck the program out, then install the new module and the old programming. I went through this with my truck, I had already replaced everything so they were a bit upset when they programmed everything "as built".
