exhaust temp sensor failure

my dads 6.4 quit today on the road, exhaust temperature sensor went out, slowed down to a stop and all it would do is idle, they had to load it up on a flat bed and haul it in.... anyone heard of this before?

I've heard of exhaust temps being too high and the truck will say "Stop Safely" then shut off once it stops. But not one failing.
