Does anyone know what's involved in retrofitting a 6.4L to run on LSD or HSD fuel? The Power Stroke "Owners Guide Supplement" mentions it on page 31 but that's about it. Is it just as simple as a DPF delete?
I venture down to Mexico for the SCORE offroad races, but have been hesitant to take my truck because of fuel. While I was down for the Baja 1000 I did see the same 2008 F-250 a couple of different times, he was an official for the race but I never got a chance to talk to him about it.
I'm with you on wanting to know that answer. Hopefully it just involves removing the DPF, but I'm not gonna be the one to test it out.
If it were only that easy. Actually the process is far more involved than simply removing the DPF. The EGR system, DOC, DPF, turbo up-pipes, etc., etc. all must go and or be replaced. All that and a new calibration...
All the parts needed to do the conversion are available from Ford, but they are not going to sell them to just anybody or just any dealer for that matter. All the "important" parts needed for the conversion have a "D" as the 4th character in the part number. "D" is for overseas product engineering parts...
Sounds like there could be alot to gain (mpg, hp & torque) by ditching all the emmisions parts.... if only we could obtain the replacement parts. Although it sounds like it'd be expensive too....
International has a bulletin that pertains to converting VT365s to "off road use only". There are some "hoops to jump through" and when its done your VT365 is retuned to the lowest power level and your truck has a top speed of 24 mph.
24 mph might apply to heavy equipment or what ever offroad only vehicles (tractors etc) they put this motor in, but if Ford is marketing the 6.4L for use anywhere outside the U.S. or the where ever ULSD is available that doesn't sound like it work out to well.
I have heard some of the rural fire departments getting 2008 brushpumpers that are "off road" and come from Ford without the DPF, and I belive they run red diesel (LSD or HSD?) also.
