valleypan gasket, why???

On a 315 or 460, you can use the standard 2 piece intake manifold gasket or a valley pan gasket. What is the benifit of a valley pan gasket? I figure it stops some heat to the carb??

On most v8 engines, exhaust is run through the intake manifold under the carb. This creates a "hot spot" so when the fuel from the carb hits the intake manifold, it stays atomized. This also makes the underside of the manifold very hot, and when oil splashes on this hot spot, it will cook. Over time it will build up into a black carbon mess that you don't want falling into the engine. So the factory uses a pan or heat shield to keep the oil from directly hitting the hot manifold and causing a problem. Some engines have a shield riveted to the underside of the manifold, some use a shield integrated into the intake gasket.
