I don't know how many of you remember from a previous thread I posted but I am in the bone marrow donor registry. I few months ago I was found to be a possible match for a 55 year old man with leukemia and I had to have some bloodwork done to find out if our tissue types matched closely enough for me to donate. They made it sound like I'd hear back within a couple weeks and when I hadn't heard anything I just assumed that apparently we didn't match up. But I just got a letter in the mail that said we are a match!
Unfortunately, the letter also said that he isn't ready for donation right now, so I hope he is ok. But I guess we'll see what happens. At the very least my advanced testing on my tissue has been done and entered into the registry database so in the future if I'm a match for someone they'll know that much quicker that our tissue types are similar enough to proceed.
Kind of a strange thing to bring up, but I'm excited and I just wanted to share that with you all.
My husband and I are on the bone marrow donor registry also. We had already been typed before we registered 6 years ago, because our daughter had leukemia then.
I would love to be able to donate my marrow. I am so excited for you. It must be a great feeling
Have you any idea what is entailed in donating bone marrow? It really isn't a bad experience, but if you are unsure of what will be required for harvesting marrow I can give you some firsthand info. One of our boys happened to be a perfect match for his sister so we were with him through the donor process.
That is wonderful!!!!!!! My husband has a donor cornea in his left eye and just had a donor ACL put in today. If it wasnt for people who are willing to do it he would only have sight in one eye.
What you are doing is such a great thing!!!!!!!
