Loss of Power

Experienced loss of power while towing approx 8,000 load, was exiting from a highway, truck had been running fine, speed was 60+ Tow-Haul was on. In the exit ramp complete loss of power, engine continued to run. Heavy black smoke from exhaust. Idle sounded fine, when attempted to pull away just more black smoke and no ability to move the load. Dropped trailer, then pulled away without load. Engine light did come on during this event. Decided to drive without trailer, got back into traffic, after about 20 seconds of acceleration everything smoothed out just fine. Continued to operate fine, after several shut downs and start ups, the engine light went out. Had tested for sense codes, everything checked out fine. No other problems since. Any ideas? 2004 F350 6.0, 35,000 miles

Check/clean egr valve, did you get under boost code p0299. Your truck has very few miles on it for its age, the turbo likely stuck. If the egr is clean your turbo likely isn't. Give her a couple of wot runs every once an a while to help the turbo freed up.If it gets stuck and over boosts the head bolts will get a little longer. There is a cleaning procedure listed in the tech folder that will keep you busy on some sunday.
