Help excursion diesel MPG

I have a 2000 Excursion Limited 7.3 4x4
it has BFG D rated all terrain radials tires with less then 5,000 miles
I don't know what pressure to run them at?
the truck has about 170,000 miles always run on sythenic oil since the first oil change

I get really low fuel mileage. I seem to average about 16 combined.

I only use my lye-o-meter to tell me fuel mileage.

The truck is completely stock. I hear about guys getting 23 and 25 mpg but I don't know how the do this. Are these 2wd drive trucks only? Do all excursions have the same gear ratio?

I accelarate easy and usually cruise at around 2000 rpm, I never really do more the 2300 rpm. I drive between 65 and 70 going to work? I do past some
diesel truck on my way to work are the guys getting 23 MPG gallon going 50 in a 55 to get those numbers? Is everyone lying?

Why is my mileage so low? I would like to average 20 in mixed driving but I don't want to mess the motor up.

I read about chips and programmers but I can't really sort through all the details, I really don't understand how 100 extra hp can give me better fuel mileage. Will that 100hp extra break my tranny or rear end? I care mainly about MPG.

I read about exhaust systems but I don't want my truck to be loud.

At $4.09 at gallon I need to do something because I don't plan to sell the truck.

Any and all help is great appreciated.
sorry for all the spelling errors

Try about 60 psi

Sounds about like what I get. I do romp on it though.

NEVER rely on it especially if you chip the car. I got 16 the other day but the lie-o-meter said 23.

And then they woke up and found their sheets wet around their crotch. You'd lose all towing power to get that.

IIRC, mostly 3.73 and a few 4.10. Check your label.

Am I lying when I tell you I saw 24? I hand calculate it. I burp it till I can fill no more and manually calculate the mileage.

IT doesn't sound that low to me

IF you are not towing haavy objects, have your PCM reflashed by DP-Tuner for their 80 Econo tune. Get a 4 in MBRP exhaust and a BTS Valve body and you will be happy.

If I drive very gently around town, I get 16 or a little more.

On the highway at 85, I get about 13. If I were to slow down to 65 I assume I'd get around the 16 I get in town. I really don't think I'd get very much more.

Mine's an '03 7.3 4x4, unmodified.

great I am not alone

it is good that I am not alone. I ordered the Napa 6637 filter today. I will look at the exhaust options. I do tow a 25' boat so I don't want to decrease my towing ability. I may get an exhaust but I don't want alot of noise. See my truck is a family/tow/real-estate vechile so it has to appear to be tame.

I ordered the 6637 today. I hope it works well, another guy said he was geting 1.6 more miles per gallon.

Anyone have true fuel number recieved after installing an exhaust?

If I get the exhaust it will cost me extra because I am the type that would want to here it when I was driving alone.

Do you guys use diesel Klean on every tank? How much are you adding per gallon?

Thanks

You can't trust the overhead gauge. You'll notice that if you reset it by holding both buttons for a few seconds while coasting downhill it will read 99.9 mpg, or at an idle, 0 mpg. It averages these obviously but I've compared hand calculations dozens of times and the overhead is frequently several miles per gallon off, usually saying I'm getting far better than I am. Especially if you are making modifications to save money, you must calculate by hand.

You must make certain you always top off the same. It usually takes me an extra 5 or more minutes to get the same fuel level. Remember that diesel fuel foams, more so when temperatures are high. You have to wait for the foam to settle before pumping again. I usually add about another 4 gallons by waiting, then squeezing the trigger manually until there is nothing but liquid with no foam right at the filler neck. That way I know I am testing for accurate mileage. Biodiesel foams less so you can fill faster.

You also have to consider that by changing the air pressure in your tires, you change the circumference. Tire height will change the accuracy of both your speedometer and your odometer, which means either maintain the same air pressure, or calculate how far off the distance you've travelled is to gauge the impact of whatever changes you've made, be them driving style, filters, tire pressure, etc. To be accurate, use a GPS.

16 mpg is not bad, that's what I strive to get on the highway. My tires have me 14% off so I multiply my mileage from the trip meter which I reset at each fill up by .86. I then divide that accurate number of miles by the number of gallons it drank. That gives me a consistently accurate track record of mileage, which I keep details of in Excel. Everything I've done to my truck has netted me better economy. PSD all stock got a consistent 11 mpg.

I guess that my rig is a whole bunch different or,as was said before,a bit of fudging on the mileage you get.. On my last trip down the "Five" to Stockton and then over to S.F. and back home,I averaged 9.6MPG for the entire trip and that was with and w/o the trailer miles..I pull my 34' TT and loaded for the two week trip,it probably weighs in the vicinity of 9K.. Around town as my daily driver I get about 12 and on the freeway on a trip,I usually get 16-18..
I am very seriously thinking of pulling the AFE intake and possibly replacing it with the stock unit and the good FRAM filter or going to the 6637.Does anyone know if there is a dry filter to replace the one in the AFE box..

The 6637 filter, MBRP exhaust, and a DP-Tuner chip is what you need hands down. The dp-tuner is custom tailored to YOUR truck to get the most out of it. You'll spend some change to get it all, but in the end it will quickly pay for itself.

Hey .... us fisherman resent that remark

Check out my signature .... If I "baby" the truck and stay at or under 65mph ... I can sneek 17mph ... realistically, 15 is a good average for me .... I average about 12 towing my trailer, so that is really great compared to my friends that tow with various large vehicles - PU and SUV's ... all gas.

I have been an X owner for over a year now and the largest inputs I have seen that affect gas mileage are: fuel (winter vs Summer Diesel) and outside temperature (cold, mild, hot) .... I think the reality is that 12-17 is normal, depending on driving, weather, and your setup ...

15-16 in town is the avg and on the highway depending on speed you should be getting 17.5-21 mpgs......23-25 BS unless you are in OD going 45 mph!
