OK this stuff has been posted before but nobody ever agreed on a definitive answer. If you put a 3.95 stoke crankshaft in a 351 windsor with stock 302 rods and .030 oversized 302 pistons with 1.62 compression height you will have a 393 stroker engine correct? Any machine work needed with this other than boring the cylinders? Do you need to order a crankshaft or can you use the stock 302 crankshaft as well? Why do you need to use 302 pistons? Can't you just use the .030 over windsor pistons or are they different heights?
I am really interested in doing this because i have the pistons and rods lying around so it would be very cheap to do. But i want to be absolutely sure it will work, i'm only building this motor once. Has anybody out there actually done it?
Compression height on a 351w piston is 0.136 higher than a 302 piston. I haven't figured out how you are going to do this "cheap". A stroker crankshaft is expensive.
You use 302 pistons, 351W rods, and a special 3.85" stroke crank to get 393" or thereabouts. The stroker cranks are available for about $450 off ebay, or about $550 from Summit Racing. There are 4.00" stroke cranks on ebay too that will get you a 408 or so, but I am not sure what rod/piston combo you need to make this one work. Strokerkits.com is a site you should check out. If you need a rebuild anyway it's not gonna cost that much more.

By cheap i meant that buying the $550 crankshaft would be cheaper than buying an entire stroker kit since i have 302 parts lying around. Actually the engine was just rebuilt by a friend of mine so all the bearings and gaskets are new. I got the engine after his truck was totaled, now i just want to go through and do a performance buildup. I plan on getting some gt-40 heads but i am going to leave the pistons and rods as they are unless i do a stroker kit.
The 393 stroker is the longest stroke you can go to without clearancing the crank. The reason for the 302 pistons is that they are just enough shorter to allow for the change in stroke without changing rod length.
Have you done this rebuild before, or did you just trip across it ? The reason I'm asking is that I am very interested in the same thing and would love to read more about it. Thanks.
