As suggested in my other thread (https://www.ford-trucks.com/dcforum/DCForumID18/680.html) I'll have to face the task of taking the front of my engine apart. Since I'm already there, I thought of changing my timing chain as I don't know what the previous owners have done on the thing. Is there a special sort of chain (like 'true roller' - whatever that is) that will be any better than others? Brands (Cloyes, Edelbrock, Crane, Dynagear etc.)? Or should I just go with OEM replacement? What about timing gear drives? I've heard they rob some horses? What other performance upgrades/replacement options are there?
You don't want or need a timing gear setup, your motor does not need anything like that if it's still reasonably stock. They are designed to take away the problem of the chain stretching over it's life and altering the camshaft timing to the crankshaft. A true roller chain will hold up longer, especially at higher RPM's but any quality OE replacement will work alright on a mild motor. Summit sells timing chains with their name on it that are decent and inexpensive. Cloyes is prolly the best out there, the price tends to match.
So far I'm tending towards a Cloyes chain, if gear drives are more for racing applications and they're all over $200!! I wouldn't want to pay that amount of money if the only improvement I get is the sound. Should I replace the harmonic damper as well? Do they ever wear out or do they basically outlast the engine? Other recommendations? I'm all eyes and ears!
You're right, it's a lot to pay for the sound of performance. The harmonic balancers do go bad. The rubber seal deteriorates and the outside balancer will rotate on the hub. You can check when you have it off to see how checked the seal appears.
Now I found this gear drive for only 99$!

Do you think they're any good? Would it fit my engine?
What could make the 100% difference in price?
