87 C-6 Tranny Question

Im swapping my 87 F150 4x4 w/ a 302 and a C6 tranny from EFI to carb. Is my C6 controlled by the ECU or is it okay to take all the electronic stuff out?

The C-6 has no electronics. It has a vacuum line and I believe that is about it. Not too sure where it hooks to though. I would go out and crawl under mine to check but it is raining here in Oregon again and the truck is parked in the mud in my back yard.

If you need me to look at where the line goes, let me know and the next time I have it on a hard surface, I will crawl under there and check for you.

Besides the transfer case plug in the back, what are the other two plugs on the side of the tranny next to the linkage. I saw a trucks episode the other day and they were turbocharging a lightning and had to do a mass air conversion and they had to use something for the tranny.

I may be wrong but there should be no plugs for electrical on the C-6. They may have been using a different tranny and yours may be different as well. I will have mine out on the road tomorrow and will check to make sure but others here with more experience should chime in with the propper hook ups.

I do not believe the Lightning came with a C-6 so if it was, then they did a swap. I think Ford quit using it in '95 or so. Please don't quote me on this as I am just going by what I was told.

The only electrical connections on the c6 are for the neutral safety and reverse switches. There may be an electrical connection on the tailshaft housing around the speedometer cable input, speed sensor or something, but Im just going off of memory right now. Other than that, there is only the vacuum input on the passenger side of the tranny for the vacuum modulator, and the throttle kickdown cable on the driver's side.

88F-150pimp is right the neutral safety/reverse lights switch is on the gear selection lever, the electric sensor on the tailshaft/speedo cable is the Vehicle speed sensor which is not needed for carburation. The Vacuum modulator needs manifold vacuum to operate so do not use any vacuum ports off the carb for this line. Preferably the same vacuum port used by the vacuum for the brake booster on the manifold can be used to supply vacuum to the C-6 as well.

As for the when the C-6 was officially discontinued, it depends on the engine, vehicle, and possibly location. Vans had it well into the 90's, light duty pickups had it in mixed use until roughly 95 or when the E4OD was the only Auto tranny offered behind the 302/351/300/460/7.3L. Vans for commercial use could get the C-6 a little while longer than the trucks.

Thank you, alxsnmr. Your post saves me the hassle of crawling under my truck when I don't need to. I do it enough already. Thanks for the info. I will keep it in mind if I have to do any work to mine.
