I have been having a problem with my computer lately and it is getting frustrating. Everytime the power goes out and knocks down the comp I can not get the thing to hook backup to the internet. It will not detect the LAN settings so I end up phoning tech support to get the thing back up. Sometimes it is as simple as turning off the modem and comp and starting backup sometimes you have to go through a bunch of programs and such just to get it back up. My questions is, what piece of hardware or software do I have to replace to get it back to normal?
Why don't you try a APU battery back up. (Staples -Office depot ) If the power goes out your computer will stay running and your connection to the telephone line won't be interupted.
Sounds like the computers NIC(network card) is having a problem renewing an IP address from the modem. With out looking at it, its hard to diagnose exactly, but depending on who you have for an internet provider, you may be able to set the IP address in the NIC as static or unchanging also depending on the modem and/or if you have a router setup aswell.
Gimme some more details as my "COMPUTER" is strong We should be able to figure this out.
You didnt mention if it was a 56k modem, high speed or wireless. I dont know much about the 56k (phone line) but I do know abit about the other two. Do you have any other computers in your network, or is it just the one?

Since he can turn his modem on and off, I'm willing to assume he's using a ISDN connection. I doubt he has a dinosaur external 33.33 baud modem!
Explicit pretty much nailed it. Here's a simple way to reset your network connection without having to reboot:
click start
click run
type: ipconfig /release
click ok
go back to run
type: ipconfig /renew
If you want a more permanent solution you could make a simple batch file to do this for you.
Open up notepad and copy paste this:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Then save the file to the desktop as "Internet Fix.bat". Now when ever there is a problem you just have to double click on it.
It is my computer at home and there is just one no network and it is highspeed from sasktel. I have windows xp home edition and the name on the modem is westel but I will check that when it get home. Thanks for the info Dueller I will keep that stored away.
Open up notepad and copy paste this:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
Then save the file to the desktop as "Internet Fix.bat". Now when ever there is a problem you just have to double click on it.
/flushdns clears your cache before you release / renew.
Also having a UPS (universal Power Supply) is a great idea too, it gives you 3 to 10 mins of run time to shut the computer down
during a black/brown out to prevent permanent damage to the mainboard or peripheral cards. A brown out is more damaging to a computer than a full on black out, as the spikes are usually higher. A power bar of which has a clamping speed of 4,000 joules or better. The cheapo power bar that you bought at Walmart can go in the trash. I wont use it on my microwave, much less a computer.
