Just to bounce off some people that really tow things. I generally stick to a homebuilt 5 x 12 landscaping trailer with a lawn tractor, big huh.
My question was how crazy my co-worker is. He has a small Kubota tractor, that he swears only weighs 700kg, and a bush hog. He puts this onto a tandem axle Hudson trailer, not sure but I believe it is a single wheel, and then proceeds to pull it with his '94 S-10. Not so much worried about the power to pull, more so the fact that even with a brake controller, is he overloaded to stop? I personally would never try this. He claims to only pull it in the area of his house, but even so.
S-10.... yeah it's prolly a bad idea long term. But I maxed out a Ranger either towing or hauling pretty regularly, and the only side effect was lots of front brake pads.
I pulled a two horse trailer with one Palimino Arab, with a 1984 Nissan extended cab 4X4. Done it off the bumper until the bumper let loose in the driveway. Then I put a hitch on the truck and pulled for another two years.
Now that I am older and wiser, I would never do that again!
How small is the tractor? My son has a mid-70's vintage John Deere tractor, 75HP diesel. Just your typical medium size farm tractor. Weighs about 6000 lbs if you remove the front loader and rear scraper. About 7500 lbs with them on it. Add 1700-2000 lbs for the weight of tandem axle flatbed, and your looking at somewhere between 7700 lbs and 9500 lbs.
75hp is a huge tractor... nowadays a new 75hp would run you $40k+. The biggest I've driven was 58hp Kabota and it weighed in at a hefty 6500lbs without any attachments. Even small ones easily push 2-3000lbs. I think that poor S10 would be suffering something harsh pulling that thing around all the time! I definately wouldn't want to be in front of it.... unless I wanted a new truck, boat, and farm with the risk of a possible broken back :P
It's a decent size tractor, but I wouldn't call it huge. The rear tires are about 5 feet diameter. I've definitely seen bigger on some of the farms around here. Maybe how they rate HP has changed since the 70's...
By your description he is around 3500# gross. I would say he could do it, but I think he is about maxed Out. A lot also depends on HIS ability also. Greg

You've got to look at what part of the country you're in too...In my part of the country (probably his too) We don't see many tractors over 130 hp, we don't have any need for them...Most are in the 55-85 range...
