Prodigy quirks.

I have the prodigy brake controller, and one thing I have noticed is that every time I hook up my trailer, the controller always sets itself to boost level 1. If my flatbed is empty I leave the boost off, but it is always back on if I have unhooked and then hooked back up. Why is this, it's kind of annoying? It still works just fine, but I dont think I should have to reset the boost every time. One other thing, if my battery dies, do I have to reset the controller?

On the battery...your voltage setting should NOT have to be reset following a dead battery since the method to actually set this on the prodigy is an actual thumb WHEEL switch...meaning it is a mechanical setting vs a programming one.

On the boost changing on its own...that's interesting. I normally have mine set to boost 1 so mine may not be a good comparison...but my boost never changes unless I toggle it.

I'm not sure what actually happens if the prodigy LOSES power momentarily...a test may be to turn off the truck with boost OFF and trailer attached...I'm thinking maybe there is a loose connection somewhere that is actually resetting the prodigy...

If the trailer STAYS connected there is no issue...right?...so to continue with my experiment...if you set boost OFF and leave trailer connected...but disconnect the PRODIGY CONNECTOR from the back of the controller...forcing a power disconnect there...when you reconnect the harness at the back of the Prodigy...what is the boost at?

I have NEVER tried to figure out how the Prodigy boots...like I said I always leave it in boost 1...I've had the battery disconnected a few times...so if the normal boot up puts it in Boost 1...that's where I run it so I wouldn't have noticed.

This experiment will at least tell you if under HARD power loss where the Prodigy naturally comes up...then you know you have a loose connection somewhere that is causing the issue...likely at the 7 pin connector...

Just a thought.

Let me know if I'm all wet...it's okay...it won't be the first time...and I can guarantee it won't be the last!

Good luck,
joe

Same here, it stays on the last setting that I put it on no matter what.

On our brake controller (TruControl), the controller will go back to default settings if it loses power. Is it possible that you're not hard wired to the battery? The controller should come on whether the key is turned or not.

The controller should always have power to it as said before. On mine I can touch the brake with no key in the ignition and the contoller will come on. It will also come on when I touch a key or lever on the contoller. The controller puts itself in like a sleep mode. The Prodigy is a good contoller but I especially don't like that you can't see the voltage value when you go to adjust it with the wheel while your on the brake. You have to be off the brake to see the value as you adjust it with the wheel. That is the main reason why I currently have the Tekonsha P3, it is much easier to use and is much better than the Prodigy IMO.

I installed an extra fuse block thats runs straight from the battery so it always has power. It's just that the boost 1 setting is too strong with an empty trailer and it ends up jerking the truck.

I'll try your little experiment tomorrow joe, I have to hook up my trailer to pick up a car for a friend. I couldn't try it right now if I wanted too, another friend has his truck in my side yard with the tranny removed blocking me from getting to my trailer. It should be mobile tomorrow.
