turbo upgrade?
I am looking to do many upgrades, 4in. exhaust, Bts vb, gauges, DP Tuner, cooler and intercooler along with what is in my sig. My ? is, as far as turbos go, is it necessary to upgrade the turbo or is the stock one ok? I am not looking for more turbo noise just want to know if there is one out for more power. What will give me the most for the mods I am planning on doing?

Terry, you have several options. A Turbonetics drop in would work and not be too noisy from what I understand. A Garrett Ball Bearing would as well, although I don't believe they are available right now due to a redesign, and they are louder than stock. There's also the option of a van turbo or simply modifying your stock turbo with different exhaust and compressor housings. As you can see, there are many turbo options out there.
If I were doing one and intended to stick with stock injectors, I'd rebuild my stock one, so it's fresh, put a 1.0 exhaust housing on it, and an ATS compressor housing on the intake side. That would be a pretty good performing turbo, IMO, but would be about half the cost of any of the drop-ins.

I'd have to agree with my bro, Jeremy here. The stock turbo modified how he said, with the intake and exhaust housings will stand up to alot of abuse. The problem is getting more fuel to the engine, not air. The stock turbo can pretty much clean up as much fuel as you can throw to it with stock injectors, in other words adding fuel would give you more power, without increasing sound too. Changing out the turbo with stock injectors really won't give you a noticeable Seat-of-The-Pants power increase. You can almost modify your stock turbo (about $600) and buy a set of injectors for close to the price of a drop-in ball bearing turbo!

Well, if you put a 1.15 housing on the stock turbo, you essentially have a van turbo. That's what I did, as well as Kris did, a couple years ago. That turbo of mine eventually blew up from being run too hard with the stock exhaust housing on it, and I put a van turbo on in it's place. Performance between the two was essentially identical between the van and truck with housing.
The intake won't need to be upgraded unless you still have problems with surging. The larger exhaust housing does help to eliminate the surge though. I'd try the exhaust housing first, then if the ATS is needed becuase of surge, you can always add that later.
FWIW, the combo of the van turbo and ATS housing never once surged on me, not even with the B Code injectors in place.

Is this what you were talkin about from beans?
BDP 1.0 turbo housing kit
This is a new product from BDP. This is a 1.0 turbine house to be a direct replacement for the stock .84 housing on the 99-03 powerstroke. This housing is non-wastegated (like the van turbo) with an adaptor to mount to the stock or modified exhaust system. With this kit you will eliminate the EBPV valve which also increases flow. This is a great turbo modification for those with the ATS compressor housing or wicked wheel. This housing will help eliminate the compressor surge commonly associated with the stock turbo, lower backpressure, and also decrease egt's up to 100 degrees.
