Stroke the old 302

Hey my father and I are considering stroking my old 302 ourselves and I am curious of any opinions, I have heard mostly good and some bad things about stroking it to 347. So any advice would be great.

Stroke the old 302

I have never personally ran a stroked 302 but a friend has one in his 91 Mustang. His kit came with a Scat crank, Eagle rods and JE pistons for about $1500. The torque improvement was pretty good but the stroked motors tend to be needed to be freshened up (new rings and bearings) quicker than stock because of the longer stroke and the shorter pistons required with the sroker crank. You will also have to clearance the block for the stroker crank. Not that hard to do with a die grinder. If you want more CI just drop in a 351W. You good almost rebuild a 351W for the cost of the stroker kit. The heads from a 302 will work with the 351 but the intake won't.

Stroke the old 302

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jan-02 AT 03:22 PM (EST)]Don't go 347 if you want any sort of longevity out of the engine. The increased rod angle creates serious cylinder wall wear. If you're going stroker, go 331. Best bang for the buck.
Or you could buy a short block and then some decent heads, intake, cam, etc.
So are you building the engine yourself, or are you having someone else build it?
My two cents.
Ben

Dang, forgot to mention, if you go with a 331 you don't need to clearance the block. Like I said, 331 is the way to go.
Also, I disagree with putting stock 302 heads on a 351 without any porting. It makes no sense to do that when people go and put 351 heads on 302's for better flow, why restrict flow more by putting 302 heads on a 351?
You could go with a 351 based stroker. The 393 kit is good for monster torque and ponies!

Stroke the old 302

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Jan-02 AT 10:33 PM (EST)]Thanks for the advice I am now leaning towards the 331. But, I'd like to know more about the 351 based stroker that brings it to 393, would it work well on the 302 and how much more would it cost than the 331. Also if you know what kind of performance increase I'll get from either of the two. And yeah I am rebuilding it myself with my father but we will be making some visits to the shop to have the block and all bored.

Ooops, breakdown in communication. The 393 kit is only for the 351, not a 302. I brought it up just as a sidebar. For a 302, the 331 is the way to go. Cheap and easy. If you can find a 351 block cheap, then go 393. More power than you'll ever know what to do with.
Hope that helps.
Ben

Yeah the main reason I'm even stroking any engine is because I came across a 302 for practically nothing. So I think I am definitely gonna go for the 331. Thanks
