Quote] here are the symptoms: while driving down the road i hear a 'surge' type sound coming from around the turbo and out the exhaust. a loss of power accompanies this sound. it happens in all gears when the motor is cold or hot. it only happens when i'm cruising with constant foot pedal pressure. as soon as i let off the throttle it goes away. and if i get on the throttle it goes away.
It sounds like the EBV is closed under light throttle and opens when you push on the throttle and the increase in exhaust opens the valve. As far as letting off the throttle, the sound goes away because there is no exhaust being forced by the valve (but it's still closed) This is normal operation in temps below 40*. If its warmer than that when this is occurring then the EBV is malfunctioning
i've only had this truck for about a month. only mods i know of are the lift and it's straight piped. i understand about the ebv functioning based on temperature....but, i have this problem when the motor is cold and at prime operating temp. and i've been driving it for an hour or so...
are the temps you're referring to ambient or are you talkin internal motor temps? it has been cold around here...night temps in the 30's and day temps ranging from 40 to 60.....

Reason: forgot to mention something
no and i don't think there all that sneaky, but they've been known to pull bs like that, i'd go back to a diff dealer and tell them u want them to check the EBV then take it for a roadtest to confirm thats the problem.

yeh...i bs'd with a couple of wheelin buds and got a names and numbers of a few trusted diesel specialists in the area. i'm planning on calling them tomorrow.
i've only had the truck a month or so. i'm unaware if the cps has been replaced.....although i mentioned this to the shop and they commented that it didn't look like the cps had been replaced 'recently'.....

You can call Ford and give them your VIN and they can tell you if the recall has been done on the truck yet. If you don't have any CPS issues I wouldn't recommend changing it, even with Ford offering to do so for free. It would be a good bit of knowledge to have though in case a problem shows up down the road.

ok....stopped by ford dealer on the way home from a diesel specialist shop today. dealer informed me after running vin that the cps sensor had been changed out in january of this year. that being said....
shop i visited today was top notch! i explained my symptoms to them and although they couldn't verify the symtoms (today for some reason the truck ran fine)....they felt the engine back pressure valve/actuator could be the offender and were skeptical of injector issues. they first scanned it and found #3 and #8 injectors were not in balance. the tech first checked out the ebpv and found it was not working correctly. after that he reflashed the pcm with updates and reset it. unplugged the back pressure valve and took it for a drive. came back and re-scanned the truck. no codes/errors/fails.....all is well.
drove the truck home 2 hours and it ran like a top....hopefully it will continue to do so for a while.
not sure if it's ok to mention shop names on here, but at risk of violating a policy i feel the need to say thank you OREGON FUEL INJECTION, INC.!!! for your services!!!!
