Post timing

what is the prime timing for a 74 f-100-302.i've got the points set at.016.also my distributor is advanced as far as it will go.the vacum advance is hitting the water neck.somebody told me that i should pull it back away from the neck and then move the wires over one spot.is this right or should i pull it away from the neck and start from scratch?truck just doesn't have the power that it did when i got it.replaced points, condenser, and coil.no difference.even replaced plugs to no avail.

If your distributor is hitting the water neck it sounds to me like you are off a tooth on the cam/distributor gear. Have you ever removed the distributor? If you have a timing light check the timing and see where you are. For a car block with points the timing should be 6 degrees before top dead center so i would assume it is the same for your truck block.
Also your timing chain might have become very sloppy. If you move the distributor and nothing much happens this could be the case. I beleive your engine uses composite timing gears which are not the strongest, most wear resistant things in the world.
Advancing the timing as far as the water neck seems a little drastic. If the timing is correct look elseware for the problem. Check compression, etc.
