Hey guys, i was going to set the timing on my 86 341w auto.....now i marked 8 degrees with white out (that's what the sticker under the engine called for) and i found the timing tab....but on the timing tab, there is a point, and then there is a circle cut out, where do i line up the mark on the tab?
There's also an old trick us old hotrodders used to use in timing an engine.
Take it out and punch it. Does it ping? NO? Move the timing ahead just a teeny step at a time and go for a quick drive. Accellerate hard. Is it pinging yet? Keep advancing the timing JUST until it starts to ping. THEN... slowly back it off JUST until the ping stops.
Perfect way to time something when you are out on the road and ye olde timing light is back at the garage.
As for late model units with computers... not sure how well this'll work, but seems I did it on my EB and other units, with a black box computer system and it worked fine.
i thought mybe because there was a circle cutout on the timing tab, and you could see the timing marks through it, that you lined up the mark in the circle.....but i'll line it up with the point.

Try it , you might like it.
I used to keep my distributor bolt tightened down JUST tight enough so you could turn it. I would change my timing all the time, retarding it for economy and bumping it up for a little rubber burning. Timing lights are for sissies.
i have to agree, i had my timing advanced...then i set it to 8 degrees with a timing light last night, and this morning it ran like ****, so i advanced it back to where it was....runs great again. I just thought i'd time it correctly, but that sucked.
