A diesel in a small vehicle ia waste, as there to heavy, to slow, to noisey and fuel cost to much. Going one step further, the diesel in the 80's rangers were all the above and not very reliable to boot. You should think long and hard before even concidering trading your 99 for one as the other guy will get the better end of that deal. I really don't know what the draw is that you guy's would want a boat anchor in your ranger. I to am from northern Ohio and our 80's rangers are getting rusty by now unless restored or kept up. I went to W,Va to get my rust free 88. You will more than likely need to go down south or out went to get a nice one. So yeah, check ebay as they have rangers from all over the country. I don't mean to be a buzz kill, I just don't think much of light old diesels and even less of the ranger light diesel. I forget who made the diesel for the ranger, but it didn't last long enough in the run to get the bugs worked out. The modern light diesels are so much better and efficent compared to the old boat anchors of the 80's. VW makes an excellent light diesel, you maybe better off swapping in a modern light diesel into your 99.

You are talking about old diesels. Have you ever draw CRD? GM ecotec 1.9 TDI has 150HP! New diesel may have much power, but boost pressure is usually limited (software things) to prevent internal damage. I tried to get as much power as possible from junk OM 601. With 4BAR boost pressure bearings were melt.
Mercedes makes S-class cars with V8 DOHC turbodiesel, ford makes Contour for Europe with 2.0 ore 2.5 CRD (called Mondeo in Europe).
Diesel has better, much better fuel milage covering difference in price of diesel fuel and gas. But be prepared, that diesels are very reliable, but injectors and nossels (especially for CRD ore pump injectors) are really expencive. Usual life of diesel fuel system is about 4-6 years ore 150-200K, if you use low sulfur fuel.
Diesel is more heavy, but usually new diesels are made of alluminium, so mercedes 2.7 TDI has the same weight like 3.0 Vulcan.
Pay attention on Japaneese Isudzu diesels made on base of old MAN diesels. They are very reliable. Ford Duratorq is good too.
I will have to disagree with Wendell also. VW diesels got at least 50 MPG. Are you going to have a power house just because you have a diesel, NO. BUT you CAN have a trouble free motor with proper care & maintance. Greg
ok, reconsider the tradein part, but i want a diesel ranger...dont care if there is rust, but i want one. and i dont wanna travel far though. those diesels in the rangers were anything but bad. my cuz's got over 30mpg! it had 250,000 when he bought it, and the guy he bought it from had another one with over 400,000 without a rebuild! plain and simple, i think they are great!
How are you disagreeing with me? I said VW makes a good diesel and I also said the newer diesels are much better than the one in the 80's rangers. Even so, gas is still better, because you can make them sound good with a decent exhaust, there snappy when you hit the gas and there's not many diesels at the drag strip. They smoke and choke. The diesels in the 3/4 ton p/u's sure don't seem to be getting that good of mpg thats it's worth paying a dollar more a gallon. I just don't care for a diesel, I'm a heavy equipment operator and get enough of diesels all day long. There in our equipment, dump trucks and our tree spade trucks that we use to move large tree's. At the end of the day, I want to jump into my mustang and let er rip. A great rumble and neck snapping excelleration. My F-150 has the 300 I-6, it makes it's peck torque at a round 2,000 rpm's, who needs a stinkin diesel. There ripping people off anyway, diesel fuel takes less refining than gas, but cost a buck more, I guess it's taxed to death. To me, a diesel means work, where as gas means fun. Nope, I've never found anything about a diesel that would make me want to go out and buy one and sure not that antique thing in the 80's ranger. Bad, those diesels in the ranger are slow as smoke and there's a guy on here who's 4 cylinder ranger has 350,000 miles on it. My son's 04 ranger with the duratec 4 cylinder gets 30 mpg and it's sorta a quick, would be quicker with a manual trans. Those old ranger diesels are the back side of nothing, parts are nonexistent for those things. They only had like a 2 year run or so. Not to many people were impressed with them or they would of sold more. Whats the chances of finding a decent 80's ranger in the northeast, slim to none. You may be able to get one decent out of W,Va like I did, or Virginia, maybe Maryland. Ohio and Pa uses salt, unless you can get a barn find or something. I know you don't mind a little rust, but a round here there seems to be a whole lot on them older rigs. There's a few nice ones in Ohio that people have preserved, but exspect to pay top dollar. I got my rust free 88 for 500 bucks setting in, you guessed it, a barn. The same guy I bought my rust free F-150 from also had the ranger setting in his barn. I saw it and he sold them both to me for 4,500. I allready had him down to 4 grand for the F-150.
Different strokes for different folks, If he wants a diesel... They are no speed demon, but not many rangers are. I have a few guys that come into the shop with 3/4 & 1 ton diesels (verious makes)that swear they are pulling over 20 mpg.
I work on diesels every day, and I would take one over any over electrified gas motor.
I think part of the reason they never sold was the fact that gas was still under a buck a gallon, and most people were scared of the "smoke belching ratteling diesel".
A diesel means work??? what, an oil change? You have no ignition system to screw up, no spark plugs to change, the fuel pump is about trouble free. the only thing that MAY require a little more attention than a gas motor is the fuel filter, and in cold weather a fuel additive.

thanks on the save greg. i can understand where wendell is coming from, and i totally respect that, and his opinion, but i live on a farm, i LOVE diesel. my other trucks got pipes, but the fact that the ranger has a diesel is what gets me, if i had too, i would go to a junk yard, and just get an old, small diesel either out of a VW, or even a small tractor one, just to have a fun off road toy.
Thats what I believe as well Pablo, there's some nice little diesels out now, much better than the one the ranger had. The diesel there putting in the oversea's ranger sounds like an awesome engine. Get something a little newer, like a common rail turbo diesel, that would make a ranger get down and grunt. Did they put a diesel in a ranger 4x4 in the
80's, all I've seen is 2 wheel drives? Off/road is where a diesel would shine with all that lowend torque.
Unfortunatly modern CRD engines have no so good torque at low speed as old ones. It is a software thing, torque limiter increase engine life and diesel overladen at low speed (less then 1100 RPM) has low fuel milage. Of course torque of diesel is higher then of gas engine, but full torque is available when boost pressure is higher then 0.5-.8 BAR and engine speed is higher 1500 RPM. Moder diesel is not an old one, that ran like a small noisy trucktor.
