help will not start when hot
I have a 1992.5 F350 Diesel with 7.3 centurion conversion
I have fixed the air leaks so there seems to be very ittle if any air in the system, I have fixed the in-tank pickup tubes, and all seemed fine. I thought the IP was bad a few months ago, but the starter was cranking slow, so I put in a new starter. It will start reliably in the morning (Delaware weather), and the glow plugs stay on for at least 6-8 seconds the first time in the morning. I bought the truck in October last year with around 180,000 miles. The PO said he put new GPs, controller, IP, injectors, lift pump looks somewhat shiny (new-er)
I have run out of ideas, so...
1. when the engine is hot after driving, I shut it off, and it will not start again until the engine is cold
2. I dont think there is any air in the system, tank return is clear
3. When I try to start it after sitting 45 minutes, the glow plug light does not even come on
4. There is fuel in the filter
5. Sorry, it was an emergency, but I had to use ether for the first time and it started right away
Batteries are good, fuel should be good-at least in one tank (switched to cheaper station), starter cranks fast, glow plugs work in the morning
I need to know if the lift pump may be at fault or it is the dreaded IP, I do not want to spend this much money for the wrong repair

Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when starter cranking engine over. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of starter engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose. When all finished hook up the FSS wire .
If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm
Are you sure the IP was in fact replaced....... was it a rebuild or just wrecker exchange.
I do not want to mention the cool water test since it renders the IP..... FUBAY after wards. It does have the resemblance of a bad/worn out IP though. Try and find out where the IP came from and if under 1 year try to get the paperwork if possible.
