really I dont think the ranger trans will take the beating that a diesel would subject it to. It may but I would think it would be easier to find another trans. They did use the one from a suzuki with a diesel from a VW on extreme 4x4 the other day! You can go to the website I think and they will have links or should have.
The oversea's ranger has the diesel option, check what tranny it's using, probbbably the M5OD like the rest of us. Hey Pablo, what tranny are they using in europe behind the diesel ranger?
With Mazda 2.0TDI - M5OD for diesel, like in Mazda E200-2200 and other small vans on this chasis..
But european Diesel ranger has duratorq engine, made on base of older pegeot diesels, and all 2.5 and 3.0 TDI have Ford tranny, like transit made in Germany ore in England, called Durashift. Autos - made in France 4R55e and 5R55e. Saw Rangers with 5.0 V8, but they had Explorer engines swapped with tranny, not sure, but looks like E4od....
Well I was hoping for a ranger manual to make the swap easier. Not many mercedes diesels were available with a stick. I want to mate a benze diesel to a stock manual trans. The 4.0 had a stick option right? Did the 5.0 in the explorers ever have one? I have heard the M50d 2 is a smaller version of the one in the F150 anyone know the strength?
Not many mercedes diesels were available with a stick.

You can easily get manual for any mercedes diesel. More then 80% Mercedes diesels have manuals. Yeah, manual is not available on S-Class, but same enigne on SLK, SL, E-class may be easily odered with manual, including diesel. All MB trucks have autos as option.
Explorers sold in Moscow have manuals on 4.0 and 5.0. M5OD R2, you are right, but R1 and R2 are different trannies of different size and different torque capasity.
Ok I will clarify not many of the mercedes benz diesels in the U.S. in the 1980s cars had diesels and that is where I am looking for he most commonly available resonably priced diesel engine. I understand that the r1 and r2 are different sizes and was just wondering f the capacity of the one in the ranger or explorer.
R1 and R1HD look simalary. At first glance there is no difference. And they are absolutelly interchangeble. Some early V6 aeros had R1, some of them R1HD.
My friend has 2.3 aero. Tranny looks like Ford Scorpio tranny. But Scorpio tranny was made in England and in Germany (Kohln, localy named Cologne, where 2.9, 2.8 and 4.0 are made). May be german trannies are clons of M5OD by Mazda?
BTW! he swaped clutch to cable controlled. Fits this tranny too. Not sure about its advantages.
